A simple do-it-yourself carport. DIY carport at the dacha Carports made of wood

A canopy is the simplest structure when arranging a summer garage on a summer cottage. Such a building will provide safe parking and protect the car from precipitation and ultraviolet radiation. It’s easy to build it yourself if building a full-fledged garage is beyond your means. How to build a durable carport with your own hands.

Options for canopies that protect cars from sun and rain

In summer cottages, three types of awnings are most often found:

  1. Extensions to the building. Even a novice builder can carry out the construction with his own hands. They are fixed to the wall on one side, so you will have to dig in fewer pillars.
  2. Stationary have at least four supports, their design is varied.
  3. Mobile awnings If necessary, it is easy to move to another place, roll up to put away for storage.

Advice: for reliable protectioncar shouldbuild a canopy with side walls.

The choice of building a summer garage depends on the size of the summer cottage and the location of the house. The second option is more profitable; the structure is installed near the fence.

Types of roof configurations and their advantages

The shape of the roof is determined by the roofing material and its placement in relation to the structure. The most common roofing forms for making a canopy:

  1. Single pitched sloping roof- a simple way to arrange parking for cars in a summer cottage. It is economical, does not require special skills or professionalism during construction, is quickly erected, and is resistant to strong winds.
  2. Gable roof (hip)– more rigid, has high windproof characteristics.
  3. Arched shape has increased rigidity and is very durable. When creating an arched canopy, the slope angle must be made no higher than 10 degrees. When installing arched systems, there is no need to install a gutter.

What should be the height of a carport?

The dimensions of the summer cottage canopy depend on the size of the machine. It must fit with the calculation of opening the doors, hood, and trunk. Therefore, we make the width several centimeters larger.

If you decide to make a carport with your own hands, consider the following parameters:

  • height – from 2.20 m to 2.5 m. With tall structures, precipitation will fall on the car;
  • the minimum height must be no lower than 2 m.

When calculating dimensions for two cars, take the distance between the rear-view mirrors equal 0.5 m.

Features of placing canopies in the country and near the house

Before you do the construction yourself, be sure to do painstaking work to create a diagram. Consider the ease of access to the summer garage, what the pillars are made of, and what roofing material will be used. Make a drawing with the dimensions of the width and length of the building. If you wish, buy ready-made projects.

Before building a shed, we select a suitable location on the site, level the site, and remove obstacles. We fill the low-lying area with sand, crushed stone, and install storm drains. Parking a heavy vehicle will require a reinforced concrete slab.

Features of the supporting structure

When building a stationary type canopy, we install at least 4 racks, which are subsequently connected to each other. Before installing the supports, we decide on the structures. We install supports in increments of no more than 1.5 meters. We calculate the dimensions in advance and put them on the drawing.

Stone, concrete, brick

Massive pillars do not require constant maintenance. But when installing heavy supports, the use of heavy equipment may be required. It is more difficult to build a canopy from brick, concrete or stone with your own hands than from wood or metal.

Brick shed diagram

Structures with massive pillars, upholstered on the sides with siding or clapboard, look solid and last a long time. Their construction costs a little less than the construction of a full-fledged garage.

Metal

Making a carport with your own hands from metal pipes ᴓ 80 mm is the right solution for creating supports. We make the indentations with a drill. Metal is afraid of corrosion, so you need to buy material that is protected from moisture.

We insert supports and fill the holes with concrete mortar. We connect the racks with crossbars. If you decide to make a canopy out of metal, you should use a welding machine.

Wooden

A wooden canopy is easy to make. Wooden posts are inserted into pre-dug holes. Wood is afraid of dampness, so when installing supports, treat the wooden canopy with antiseptics.

Tar the bottoms of the posts that will be buried in the ground. The measures taken will increase the service life.

Schemes and drawings of canopies

We have collected the best shed designs for building in a country house or in the courtyard of a private house. Please note that dimensions in the drawings may vary and are indicated in millimeters or centimeters.

How to make a polycarbonate canopy

When choosing a roofing material for a shelter, you should pay attention to polycarbonate; it is the best for making a canopy. Polycarbonate coating looks great and has many advantages:

  • durable;
  • easy to install;
  • has a rich palette of shades;
  • has increased flexibility;
  • withstands significant impacts;
  • the shapes and sizes of the canopy can be of any configuration;
  • low price.

An arched canopy with screen walls made of polycarbonate sheets will protect the car from precipitation.

Color and quality of polycarbonate

Honeycomb panels made of polycarbonate are available in varying degrees of transparency and colors. Green goes well with the natural landscape. It is better to make the extension the same color as the house. In any case, the choice depends on the taste preferences of the owner. Products from trusted brands will not bring unpleasant surprises; their manufacturers value their reputation and adhere to strict standards.

Selection of polycarbonate panels

A canopy made of matte panels will protect the car from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation and precipitation. Polycarbonate is available in two types: monolithic and cellular. The second option is light, plastic, and diffuses light. Monolithic is of high quality, but heavy and expensive.

To build a canopy you will need sheets:

  • roofing 16 mm thick;
  • for vertical surfaces the material is 10 mm thick.

Advice: cell phone endspolycarbonateclose punched paper tape, otherwise in a year they will become moldy, dirty, and become unusable.

Instructions for building a polycarbonate canopy

Installing the canopy step by step:

  • make a diagram and drawing;
  • preparing the site;
  • install supports. We dig holes with a depth of 50 to 150 cm. We install the racks strictly vertically. We check the level. When you bury the supports, fill the holes with crushed stone and secure with concrete mortar. Leave for at least three days;
  • we connect the racks with beams;
  • we install a frame that should bear the load from snow in winter;
  • we install drainage;
  • Let's start installation. We lay the sheets with the factory film facing out. We cut the panels in accordance with the project. We connect with special profiles. We fix the honeycomb polycarbonate sheets with thermal washers with rubber bands to insulate the holes. The edges polycarbonate close end tape protecting the honeycomb inside;
  • remove the protective film;
  • We cover the upper ends of the polycarbonate panels with aluminum tape.

Advice! A small margin of hole diameter will prevent cracking of the fastening points.

Monolithic polycarbonate is difficult to drill; it is secured with polymer putty.

This is a self-cleaning material; wash when dirty using soft cloths and soapy water. You may need a sponge or soft-bristled brush to remove stubborn dirt. Washing with a hose is allowed. Do not clean in hot, sunny weather. Fallen leaves are swept away with a soft broom. It is more convenient to clear the surfaces of a gable sloping roof from snow.

How to build a wooden carport

Building a wooden carport with your own hands begins with laying a base of wooden elements. After installing the supports, we nail the transverse cutting boards. We lay the rafters on the supports, make recesses on the rafters according to the template. Stepping back 10 cm, we lay the outer rafter on the beam. Plank trusses cover a long span without any problems. They are collected on the ground, then raised, mount on supporting structures. This reduces construction time. After completing the roof installation work, we install the gutter. We cover the gables with clapboard.

Wooden roofing material is treated with a waterproof mixture and fire-resistant impregnation. We secure the boards to the frame with galvanized screws. Roofing felt was previously laid on top of this traditional shelter, but recently metal tiles or ondulin have been laid.

Metal carport

Cross members are welded to the pipes. Metal roofing material is produced from steel, copper, aluminum. The most popular are metal tiles, galvanized coatings, and polymer-coated profiled sheets. The roof trusses are a special frame, connected by welding. The structures consist of a base, reinforcing posts, and reinforcing braces. Properly welded trusses can withstand heavy loads. The calculation depends on the overall dimensions of the building; trusses are usually installed in increments of 1 m.

Mobile canopy

Mobile metal canopies consist of a folding compact structure - frames with awnings. They will protect the car during precipitation anywhere. You can install a mobile structure on one car in two hours.

Using awnings as a summer option would be an ideal solution, but they cannot replace a full-fledged warm garage. It is possible to build a canopy for summer cottages without large material costs. Ready-made projects will help realize the idea of building with your own hands.

Almost no modern yard is complete without a convenient or canopy. A simple structure serves as reliable protection from atmospheric agents and protects your car from the sun, early rotting and corrosion. Would you like to make a carport for your car? In fact, such a design does not require a lot of money and effort. It is quite possible to do it yourself. Let's figure out how to build a simple garage or functional shed that will reliably protect your car. We will also find out what materials can be used for such construction.

Let's first figure out why it is better to make a carport for the country house. First of all, when there is no cover over the car, raindrops can penetrate inside the body, which will eventually cause the appearance of. In addition, hail can leave dents in the surface of the car, and dust can get into all the cracks. At the same time, the sun's rays can burn the upholstery on the seats.

The country canopy is quite light, but it is quite enough to cover a car that is not constantly in the country. The structure for the car can be built very quickly. In this case, the building can be made from a profile pipe, from ondulin or from boards, and simpler options are made from fabric.

You can also purchase a ready-made version from the manufacturer, for example, folding or prefabricated. You can make options from affordable materials. You can see what different carports look like in the photo.

carport

If you decide to build such a structure for a car yourself, then you need to know about the following features:

  • Before starting work, you need to complete preparatory work, including designs and drawings. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the volume of material required, as well as permissible loads, dimensions, cost and location;

  • After drawing up an approximate estimate, you need to purchase the necessary materials. Also consider the consumption of additional materials that may be needed;
  • It is important to decide where the structure will stand. And also, what its height should be depending on the dimensions of the car. Preparatory work includes preparing the base and leveling the site. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the slope of the territory, subsidence and occurrence of groundwater;

  • The most difficult stage is the construction of the structure. The frame installation, construction and covering are carried out.

You can make a beautiful canopy with a gate. Also, such a device can be one part of a utility unit or complement a barn. You can build a cantilever version of the structure, but for a simple structure a regular one can be used.

Location of carport on a summer cottage

Before starting any construction work, you need to consider a place for the canopy. From the selected area you need to remove the turf to a depth of 12-15 cm, and then build a cushion of crushed stone and sand. In this case, you can build a slight slope, as well as around the perimeter. Then you need to lay any parking covering on the pad. If the machine is too heavy, you can install a reinforced concrete screed.

Depending on the method of location on the site, the structures can be autonomous, and can also be used as a garage, bathhouse or utility block. Also popular are the galleries that connect the house and the gate.

Individual devices stand on metal or wooden supports. If the structure is adjacent to another building, then it may have the following support options:

  • beam-supported, when one of the sides is supported on a beam, and the other on supports;
  • cantilever-support– fastening is carried out using brackets or corners;
  • console version recommended for small structures.

Carport in front of garage

Now let's look at the options for garage canopies and the features of their construction. The most common option is when the canopy is placed in front. It can be made for one or two cars. A similar structure can be built between the garage and the house. In the photo you can see the most popular ideas. Sometimes a combination of a garage and a garage is used.

When deciding how to make a lightweight canopy, you can place it on the side of the main structure. For the construction of the roof, materials such as metal profiles, pipes, and also are used. The roof can be made of polycarbonate, corrugated sheets or metal tiles. Part of the canopy can also be placed over the garage. Similar designs can be of the following types:

  • open have a common wall with the garage;

  • closed have three walls. In this case, cladding is performed using wood, awning fabrics or lining. If necessary, the canopy can be covered.

In addition, such buildings can be collapsible or stationary. Often a garage with a canopy is built under a gable roof; this option is recommended for a wooden frame. If the structure is arched, then you can use a metal frame with supports.

Garage or shed - which is better: the answer to this question depends on financial resources, the purpose of the structure and the materials used. The most convenient solution is a combined option.

Carports attached to the house: photo

An extension near the house is popular because adjacent structures are easier to install. You can also use a simpler mount. Before deciding how to build such a canopy and how to attach it to the wall, you need to understand the materials.

The frame for construction near the house is often made of wooden beams or metal pipes. Also, structures next to the house are made of stone or filled with cement supports.

The project for a canopy in front of the house requires the presence of strong supports that can withstand the weight of the main roof of the house. You can see how to make beautiful designs in the photo.

Any such structure consists of a roof and a frame. Particular attention should be paid to the base. You can choose the following material:

  • wood It is easy to process and does not require any complex tools. But this material requires special care. Over time, the tree becomes covered with fungus, rots and cracks. It must be protected with special impregnations;

  • steel profile pipe installed using a welding unit. Such material can last a long time;

  • combined option involves the use of cladding a steel frame with wooden slats.

For the roof, a more aesthetic solution is to use cellular polycarbonate, or you can also use a profiled sheet.

Features of carports for 2 cars

Using carports, you can build practical structures for two cars. When choosing a specific design for two cars, you need to choose the right dimensions. The photo shows the best options for such buildings. You can combine this design with a utility unit. The spacious structure for two cars has dimensions of 8 by 6. The standard width should be at least 2.5 meters.

How to cover a carport

When choosing a canopy, you should focus on the general architectural style of other buildings. It is important to decide on the materials. The important point is the covering. The choice of material also depends on the type of roof. The following options are often used:

  • single slope option is the easiest to install. It is recommended for the construction of free-standing buildings;

  • gable structures also used for autonomous structures and tent buildings;

  • used for attached and separate sheds arched roofs.

For the construction of structures with a gable roof or a pitched roof, materials such as metal tiles, slate, corrugated sheets, ondulin or polycarbonate are used. To make arched structures, rolled metal and polycarbonate are used.

The simplest option is a pitched roof. In this case, the slope of the slope is approximately 25 degrees. Rigid sheet material is excellent for pitched structures.

Polycarbonate carports

Polycarbonate can be used to build durable structures for two cars or one. This material has many advantages, for example, affordable prices. Polycarbonate can be placed over any carport. At the same time, simple designs for the dacha can be easily done with your own hands.

When deciding how to make a structure, it is necessary to take into account the material of the frame, and the thickness of the polycarbonate is also important. In the photo you can see what similar structures made of this material look like for 2 cars or for one.

Polycarbonate is placed on the frame structure and secured using special ones. Using this material, you can build a garage with a carport.

Carport made of corrugated sheets

A carport made from corrugated sheets is one of the most popular. This coating can be easily done with your own hands. In addition, this design is lightweight. It can be firmly fixed to the frame, which will ensure its stability in strong gusts of wind.

This material can also be used as an awning cover. You can see what a canopy made of corrugated sheets looks like in the photo.

Before work you need to make at least the simplest drawings. Installation is quite simple. Regardless of the design option, corrugated sheets must be laid from bottom to top. First, the first part is attached, and its edge is screwed with self-tapping screws. You can also use clamps with a rubber gasket. After this, another overlapping sheet is installed. Two more self-tapping screws are screwed at the joints.

Carport made of metal tiles

In the photo you can see options made of metal tiles. With drawings at hand, you can make simple designs with your own hands. If the roof for the main building is made of such material, then you can make an attached canopy under one roof. In this case, you can make a completely closed structure for installing a car.

If a shed roof is used for an autonomous canopy, then the walls can be placed on a solid foundation made of tiles, cement or concrete. Often different manufacturers offer turnkey designs. The price depends on the size of the building and the materials used.

Carport frame materials

When building a canopy, it is important to choose the right material for the frame system. The option chosen will depend on whether the structure is stand-alone or has a house attached to it.

Wooden canopies

A wooden shed is quick to build and can be built with your own hands. A timber structure can last for many years if it is treated with special protective compounds. A wood frame for a car can be covered with polycarbonate, slate, tiles or ondulin.

Budget materials for the dacha include wooden blocks. They are characterized by a long service life. In order for the material to last for many years, it should be treated with antiseptic drugs.

A canopy on a wooden frame has the following advantages compared to metal structures:

  • environmental friendliness and safety of the material;
  • low weight of the structure;
  • ease of processing and installation;
  • low cost.

When deciding how to make a cover for cars, you need to take into account that they can be stationary. Also, a project for a summer house may look like an extension to a house. There are different ways to install wooden posts. To increase their stability, the supports need to be additionally concreted. A lean-to canopy can be used as an addition to an existing structure. Installation of such structures requires certain drawings. One edge of the structure rests on the wall of the building, and the second on the racks.

Autonomous structures for cars are supported by four racks. The photo shows different options for such designs. If you plan to install several machines, then the number of supporting elements increases.

When constructing wooden structures, some rules will help you:

  • the construction of supports must be made from rounded or profiled. To build a rafter system, you will need small diameter bars;
  • roofing material must be selected taking into account the slope of the slope and the structure of the rafter structure. Polycarbonate is recommended for decking of various configurations. Corrugated sheeting can be used for single-pitch gable roofs. Soft tiles require a continuous sheathing;
  • the coating should have a certain slope of 5-10 degrees.

As a rule, canopies attached to a building are made along the entire length of the adjacent wall. The average height of a wooden structure should be about 2-2.5 meters.

Metal carport

You can make a functional and reliable metal canopy with your own hands. Most often, a channel, a corner, as well as a regular or profile pipe are used for shelter. Installation can be done from lightweight materials on which an awning or ondulin is laid. For capital frame systems, you can use euro slate or metal tiles.

You can look at the photos for beautiful ideas for your dacha. Metal elements are quite reliable and can last for many years. You can also use ready-made solutions, for example, dismountable or prefabricated. They most often come in standard sizes.

To build metal structures yourself, you need drawings. Installation can be made from metal corners, channels and pipes.

Forged structures are also popular. Such buildings are expensive, and their construction requires specialists. To make a high-quality design, you need to take into account the dimensions of the machine, the installation of the frame system and coating materials. By combining all these characteristics, you can build a high-quality building.

DIY carport

How to build a quality shed depends on many factors. First you need to outline the perimeter of the future site. In order for the extension under the car to be strong, you need to pour a foundation for the supports and concrete the pillars. You can build a carport at your dacha with your own hands using a pile-screw or a strip carport. To build a foundation for the pillars, you will need sand, cement, crushed stone, supporting elements, a shovel and a concrete mixer.

If you don’t know how to make a foundation, then the drawings will help you. First you need to remove the turf and dig a hole around the entire perimeter of the future structure. How to install canopy posts depends on the material used. Holes are dug under the supports. This work can be done with a drill. Then the racks are installed and filled with a cement composition with the addition of crushed stone. After this, it is necessary to fill the ditch around the entire perimeter at ground level. If you want to know how to properly install a car shelter at your dacha, then remember that you need to let the foundation settle for a couple of weeks.

The extension involves the installation of a high-quality platform. In this case, it needs to be covered with crushed stone and laid.

When selecting materials, take into account the design of the structure near the house and the building itself. If everything is made of timber, then construction from boards is an excellent option. If the entire dacha ensemble was built using corrugated sheets, then the rest of the structures are made of the same material.

Car roofing made of polycarbonate is capable of transmitting sunlight, which makes the entire structure light. At the same time, for construction in the yard, you can use polycarbonate of various thicknesses and a varied color palette. Various roofing materials are used for covering.

We build a structure according to a design that takes into account the shape of the roof (single-pitched, double-pitched or domed version), as well as the height of the structure and wind and snow loads. This is especially important if the carport is attached to the house.

In the table you can see important points of the construction process.

Image Important Steps Description

Creating a metal frameThe metal frame can be welded. For this you will need a profiled pipe, a welding unit and a grinder.

Construction of a wooden frameA simple option made from timber. To do this you will need bolts and nuts, a hacksaw, a wrench for the size of the bolt and a beam. All elements are treated with antiseptic compounds.

Installation of supportsThe locations of the pegs are measured using pegs and twine. Holes for racks need to be dug to a depth of 50 cm. It is recommended to weld pieces of reinforcement in the lower part for greater durability. The supporting parts are placed in the recesses and filled with concrete.

Installation of roofing elementsAlong the entire perimeter of the frame, you need to tie the top and bottom. Before welding, the parts can be secured with clamps. It is necessary to make a large number of corners and then attach them to the frame. Then these elements are secured with ties. In this case, they will serve as sheathing and stiffeners.

Final workCover the metal with two layers of anti-corrosion paint, and the wood with an antiseptic. Roofing material is laid over the corners and secured to the frame.

How to lay out the flooring under a canopyThe budget option involves the use of rolled lawn or seeded grass. You can also use gravel chips, clinker bricks or paving slabs.

In the photo you can see what a building made from scrap materials looks like. And also in the video below you can see a step-by-step installation of such a design.

If you want to build a yard canopy on the cheap, you can make the structures out of fabric or a banner. When deciding how to build a building, consider different options and designs. You can also look at the garden version of canopies. You can see how to build a structure in the garden or yard yourself in a step-by-step master class.

When constructing structures, remember these rules:

  • the best distance between supports is 1.15 meters, and the length of the structure is selected depending on the number of cars;
  • when choosing a height, do not forget that you need to take into account the dimensions of the car with the trunk;
  • supports can be made of timber, concrete or brick;
  • The most inexpensive, strong and durable materials include polycarbonate and corrugated sheets.

The canopy can be decorated with wooden bars, as well as beautiful forged elements. To decorate light buildings you can use vines and climbing plants.

Article

A carport is a simple, reliable and practical way to protect your iron horse from precipitation, “surprises” of birds, sunlight, and leaves. At the moment, there are many options for how to make a carport, they differ in size, shape, and material of manufacture.

In the article we will talk about the technical features of the construction, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various designs, which materials are better to choose. We will also offer drawings and step-by-step instructions on how to build a carport with your own hands.

Design overview

A canopy is essentially a simple, small architectural form consisting of vertical supports, a roof and a platform. Since the building is located near the house, its style should be combined with the overall ensemble or fit harmoniously into the landscape of the site.

Carport Materials - Supporting Structure

It is possible to make a carport with your own hands from almost any materials; their choice depends on your capabilities and budget for construction. Let's look at the most popular projects:

  • A carport made of wood, it can be laminated or profiled timber, logs, trunks. Wooden structures are very easy to manufacture, do not require special tools, but are fire hazardous and require careful treatment with antiseptics and fire-resistant mixtures.
  • Metal carports are perhaps the most popular type of construction. The frame is made of pipes, welded from a metal profile, or it is a beautiful forged product. The construction of a metal canopy requires special welded equipment and skills to work on it, or the involvement of specialists. The construction is strong, reliable, durable, the only negative is corrosion, so metal parts must be protected from dampness.

  • Built on stone, concrete, or brick pillars, carports are more massive compared to previous options, but do not require additional processing and are easier to operate.

Important: Fire retardants are products of groups 1 and 2 according to GOST 16363/NPB 251, which must have a certificate and a certificate of sanitary and epidemiological inspection. For critical, load-bearing elements, only compositions of the highest group can be used; according to the visual inspection nomenclature, the transparent mixture is pink.

Types of roofing and materials

A carport with a pitched roof is the easiest way to arrange a comfortable parking space. Here it is important to correctly make the mauerlat - the strapping along the upper heads of the pillars and the rafter system, which must withstand wind loads and snow pressure on the roof. If there is less than 4500mm between the support pillars, you can do without additional supports, if more, then you will have to make additional supports. For a carport, the minimum roof slope is 25°, but the final slope depends on the choice of roofing material.

Good to know: With a roof slope of 25°, for every meter in length, 300 mm of height is added, so if the carport is 5 m, then the rear pillars should be higher than the front ones by: 5 * 300 = 1500 mm.

Less often, sheds are equipped with a gable or hip roof; these are large and complex buildings designed for multifunctionality, for example, the first floor is for a car, and the second is a gazebo.

Types of roofing materials for a single-pitched rafter system:

  • profiled sheet;
  • roofing felt;
  • soft tiles;
  • metal tiles;
  • ondulin;
  • slate;
  • polycarbonate;
  • awning

Under the curved, arched roof, a polycarbonate carport is installed. Usually this is a metal arc-shaped structure, welded under a truss from profile pipes or a forged product. Here it is important to calculate the strength and design of the load-bearing elements. Canopies made of polycarbonate can be considered universal, they look light, are almost invisible on the site, and therefore fit into any architectural composition.

Mobile carports

Nowadays you can buy compact, folding carports. I imagine a metal frame with a tent roof. The assembly diagram is simple; the structure can be installed with the efforts of 1-2 people in 1-2 hours.

You can install a carport in your country house with your own hands in 2-4 hours

This option is convenient for summer cottages and outdoor trips. The kit may include side walls made of soft glass or an awning.

A mobile carport for a car in the country; if necessary, you can always roll it up or move it to another place

Area

The area for a carport can simply be covered with crushed stone, but more zealous owners install a concrete slab, pave it with natural stone or paving slabs. To prevent the site from collapsing, it is necessary to prepare the site: remove the top fertile layer of soil, fill the bottom of the pit with sand and crushed stone, and compact it. Don't forget about the slope and drainage so that water does not stagnate on the site.

Good to know: To more reliably protect the car, it is recommended to equip the canopy with additional side walls.

It is better to make the platform at ground level; if it is higher, do not forget to provide a descent

Features of accommodation

A carport can be a free-standing structure attached to a house, outbuilding, garage, or adjacent to a fence. The choice of location depends on the conditions on your site. It is better if the structure is supported on independent supports, but if necessary, one of the sides can be made of a cantilever type.

Building a carport with your own hands - an example of how to attach the structure to a house

Which canopy is better?

Each type of material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, wood is susceptible to rotting and burns, metal rusts, special welding equipment is required, and these materials require constant maintenance. Building from brick and stone is troublesome; it requires masonry skills, effort to mix concrete, and the time investment is greater than equipping a wooden and metal shed.

Forged products bring luxury and elegance to your home

Here the choice depends on your capabilities; it’s easiest to build from wood, but if you’re good at working with metal, then it’s likely that welding the frame will be much more convenient for you.

Corrugated sheeting – does not fade, does not require painting, does not peel off

As for roofing materials, of course, it is faster and easier to use rigid sheet format: polycarbonate, corrugated sheets, slate. Roofing felt will cost much less, but installation will require sheathing of rafters, just like for soft tiles. The most appropriate option is corrugated sheeting and polycarbonate, which is called “not expensive and cheerful,” but if you compare them, corrugated sheeting is susceptible to corrosion over time, but polycarbonate does not have such disadvantages. Plus, it allows light to pass through, so the space will not be darkened if the canopy is attached to the house.

A huge color palette makes polycarbonate a universal material for roofing small architectural forms

Technical side of the issue

Support posts for wooden carports are made from timber 150*150, 100*100 mm, or rounded logs with a radius of 150-200 mm. For metal structures, a round steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm or a profiled one with an edge of 80 * 80 mm is suitable. The distance between supporting structures is 1.5-2.0 m; in some cases, three-meter spans are allowed, but such options require complex engineering calculations.

Carports made of polycarbonate, photo project of parking for 2 cars

For purlins - profiled pipe 40*80 mm, for large carports - 80*80 mm, for mauerlat 100*100 mm or 150*150 mm, for metal sheathing - pipe 40*40 mm, for rafter system made of wood - edged board 100*40 mm.

Dimensions

The ergonomic size of the canopy for an average car is 5 * 2.3 m, the dimensions of the building are considered universal - 6.6 * 3.6 m, suitable for minibuses, SUVs, crossovers. To make the carport for 2 cars convenient, but at the same time not take up additional space on the site, it is optimal to choose a size of 6.3 * 5.9 m.

The height of the canopy directly depends on the height of the car plus the upper trunk with things. Too low will be inconvenient when getting out of the car, so it is advisable to make the height 1.9 - 2.2 m; if you make the building higher, precipitation will fall on the site.

Construction of a carport with your own hands, drawings of a parking lot adjacent to the gate

According to standards, the dimensions of a carport should be 1 m larger than the car in length and 1-2 m in width. The width of a carport for two cars is calculated as follows: the sum of the widths of two cars + 1 m on each outer side + 0.8 m between cars.

Main load-bearing elements for a wooden carport

How to build a polycarbonate carport with your own hands

We will build a simple metal structure with a pitched roof and a polycarbonate roof.

Project with dimensions and materials for making the structure

We choose a place, fence it around the perimeter with posts according to the drawing, and stretch the rope. We remove the soft layer of soil and dig a pit approximately 300 mm deep. On the sides, every 1.5 - 2 m, we dig holes for support pillars, 700-100 mm deep, depending on the height of the groundwater and the nature of the soil.

We level the bottom, lay sand and crushed stone, a layer of 100 mm, compact it so that there are no traces of a person of average weight. We install the formwork, knit a reinforcing frame for the slab, only corrugated rods 8-12 mm, cell 100*100, 200*200 mm. We reinforce the pillars separately. To do this, pour 200 mm of concrete at the bottom of the pit, and insert reinforcement into it; the frames can be made in advance, tie the rods in the form of pillars and wrap them with roofing felt in 2 layers.

Good to know: You can not pour a columnar foundation separately, but immediately concrete the load-bearing posts into the ground: a metal pipe or beam, but this option is less practical, since the material in the ground will collapse even with a protective layer.

We pour concrete, a thickness of 100 mm is sufficient for a slab, and wait for the concrete to set. Since the base will not be loaded, after a week you can begin the main work.

Using corners and brackets, we attach supporting metal posts with a diameter of 50-100 mm to the columnar foundation, check the plumb line, and install slopes to maintain the geometry. We check the height of the pillars and cut them if necessary to maintain the slope of the roof.

Ways to secure vertical support posts

We make the strapping along the upper heads and weld it to the base with a 40*40 mm metal profile. Next, we attach additional strapping perpendicular to the posts, thus obtaining a right triangle for the truss. Using rolled products of a smaller cross-section, we weld the stiffeners of the rafter system. We lay the rafters from a square metal profile perpendicularly, every 800-1200 mm, the canopy over the edge of the trim is 200-300 mm, and we weld it. We clean all parts with a stiff metal brush and wash with solvent. After drying, prime and paint.

An option for a simple rafter system that is easy to make with your own hands

Advice: Choose fasteners made of galvanized steel, this will avoid corrosion and subsequent destruction of materials.

We lay a polycarbonate sheet on the rafter system; it is better to use cellular rather than cast, it is more resistant to mechanical damage. Convenient sheet thickness is 6-12 mm, the color depends on the rest of the design of the site.

We attach the polycarbonate to special press nuts to avoid water leakage every 300-400 mm. We close the edges with end strips.

How to properly attach polycarbonate to the rafter system

In this design, polycarbonate can be easily replaced with corrugated sheets; material with a thickness of 0.5 mm is suitable.

How to properly attach a corrugated sheet

If necessary, such a structure can be sheathed on the sides with a wooden lattice or curtains made of awning, tarpaulin, or soft glass can be hung.

Having chosen a suitable place, sketch out a plan diagram on paper indicating the exact dimensions, make a calculation and prepare the tool.

Necessary tool

A good owner will have almost all the necessary tools to build a shed. You can always rent what you need or ask a neighbor. There is no need for highly specialized tools, but depending on the materials used for the racks, a different set of tools may be needed:

  1. Entrenching tools: a shovel, a sledgehammer, a pick and a crowbar - will be required for earthworks: leveling the site and digging holes for canopy posts.
  2. Carpenter's tools: a hammer, a hacksaw, a chisel or a chisel - are used to install wooden posts, joists and sheathing of the canopy roof.
  3. Measuring tools: tape measure, spirit level or building level, plumb line, carpenter's angle - are necessary in any case for the correct installation and installation of the canopy.
  4. Power tools: drill, turbo sander, screwdriver and bits, jigsaw. And if you install reinforced concrete or metal support posts for a carport, you will need a welding machine.

Consumable fastening materials include nails, self-tapping screws, bolts, metal corners, etc. Their quantity and dimensions are determined depending on the materials and design of the canopy

Materials and their cost

Calculation of materials is made in accordance with the drawing of the carport. Taking the conditional length of the car to be 4 meters, the planned canopy is 5x2.5 m. If the car exceeds the usual dimensions, a jeep or minivan, the canopy is built somewhat more spacious, approximately 6.5x3.5 m. When designing a canopy, start from the dimensions of the roofing sheets. The height of the canopy should allow the trunk to be opened freely. This is approximately 2.5 meters.

The number of support posts, depending on the material, canopy area and roof weight, ranges from 4 to 10 pieces. If one of the sides is adjacent to the building, fewer racks will be required. Materials for support posts and metal canopy frame:

  • round pipe with a diameter of at least 1 inch or similar profiled (square or rectangular);
  • a metal corner with a shelf of at least 50 mm or a channel, T-beam or I-beam with a metal thickness of 3 mm or more.

The cost of a rolled metal profile depends on the grade of metal, the most common for steel 40 GOST 1050–88, and the weight formed by the thickness of the walls. Today, a profile pipe 50x50x3 costs around 180 rubles per meter. Corner 50x50x5 - approximately 150 rubles per meter.

A frame made of wooden beams will cost less. For support posts, 100x100 softwood timber costs approximately 60 rubles per linear meter. A timber for a 50x50 frame costs about 17 rubles per linear unit. m. The price is affected by the type of wood, humidity and type of wood.

Any materials used for roofing work are suitable for covering the canopy:

1. Corrugated sheeting - with a polymer coating 0.4 mm thick costs from 155 to 175 rubles/m2, similar galvanized sheeting costs from 130–150 rubles/m2. Galvanized steel sheet measuring 1000x2000x0.4 mm costs approximately 2,660 rubles per piece. A galvanized ridge measuring 2000x100 mm will cost 95–100 rubles per piece, and with a polymer coating - 120 rubles per piece. To install a metal roof, you will need additional and drainage elements.

2. Gray slate type SV-40 has 7 or 8 waves with a thickness of 5.8 mm and standard dimensions of 1750x1130 mm, costs 220–230 rubles per sheet. A slate sheet weighs from 19 to 25 kg, depending on the thickness and density of the material. Colored slate will cost a little more - up to 300 rubles per sheet. The disadvantages of slate include the fragility of the material and its heavy weight.

3. Metal tiles 0.4 mm thick cost from 180 rubles/m2. The working width of the metal tile is 1100 mm, the total width is 1180 mm. This is a reliable and lightweight material for canopy roofing. It is easy to transport and install.

4. Plastic roofing is intended for canopies and awnings. As a rule, it is made of polycarbonate or polyvinyl chloride. The standard sheet size is 2000x900 mm or is produced in rolls of 10–20 meters with a width of 1.5 to 3 m. On average, the price of a sheet is around 300 rubles.

Installation of canopy support posts

For the support posts of the canopy, holes 0.7 meters deep are drilled or dug according to the markings. The bottom is filled with crushed stone and compacted. The concreted end of the support post is treated with an antiseptic and bitumen mastic. The support posts, positioned strictly vertically, are poured with concrete. The principle of installing supports is the same for wooden and metal racks.

After the concrete has dried, the truss structure for the roof is mounted on the racks. Wooden support posts are tied around the perimeter with a 50x150 mm board, and a rafter skeleton is installed on the resulting upper crown of the canopy. A 50x100 mm beam with an installation pitch of about a meter is suitable for it. The exact pitch of the rafters is dictated by the width of the roofing material. The rafter beams are installed in places where roofing sheets overlap.

For metal racks, the rafter system is welded on the ground. A rectangular frame is welded from a 50x50 mm corner according to the dimensions of the racks. For the corner gable roof of the canopy, rafters are welded from the same corner. For an arched roof, a metal strip is used. Holes for fastening the roof are drilled in the rafter system. Typically, the pitch of the holes for any type of roof is 10–15 cm. The rafter system is installed on support posts and secured by welding.

Carport roof decking

A sheathing is sewn onto the rafters perpendicular to them. For this, both edged and unedged boards 20x100 mm are used. The first line of the sheathing is placed along the edge of the slope, the top line at the point where the ridge is attached. The distance between the lines is 50–70 cm. The lines should be located in the places where the roof is fastened and overlaps.

Roofing sheets begin to be laid from the bottom corner to the ridge with an overlap of 10–15 cm. The slate is fastened with special galvanized nails with a large head. It is nailed with light rhythmic blows with a hammer on a slate nail installed at the top point of the wave.

For plastic slate, corrugated sheets, and metal tiles, galvanized self-tapping screws equipped with special plastic gaskets or press washers are used. Typically, one roofing sheet requires 10–12 self-tapping screws. Roofing sheets are often supplied with a set of fasteners of the corresponding color.

Roofing sheets are attached to the metal canopy frame using bolts with metal and sealing washers or metal self-tapping screws, under which sealing gaskets are installed. published

Of course, having a garage is very good, but, firstly, there is not always a place for it, and, secondly, sometimes there is no point in driving a car there if you want to use it again in half an hour. In such cases, a carport comes in handy as it will protect it from the rain and allow you to leave the equipment in the yard. A structure of this type is usually made of metal, timber or logs (supporting part), and the roof is made of polycarbonate, corrugated sheets (metal tiles), ondulin or slate.

To make a carport with your own hands, you should clearly understand what the finished structure will be like, and for this, at a minimum, you need the simplest sketch. Depending on the project, tools and materials are selected. In this case, we will consider a gable canopy with a wooden frame.

Gable carport in the private sector

DIY tools

For such work it is convenient to use a circular saw.

Considering the fact that the carport will be constructed from wooden beams and metal (corrugated sheeting), the following tools will be required:

  • to cut wooden profiles you can use a hacksaw, but, of course, it is better if it is a stationary or hand-held circular saw (circular saw) or, as a last resort, an electric jigsaw;
  • The corrugated sheets are cut using an angle grinder (grinder) with a metal cutting disc;
  • For assembly, it is most convenient to use a cordless drill (screwdriver) with appropriate attachments;
  • riveter;
  • a bayonet and shovel shovel to level the soil or dig holes for the foundation;
  • water (laser) and/or regular level;
  • metric tape, construction corner and pencil.

Materials and fasteners for construction

Corrugated sheeting with different configurations for the roof

To make such a carport with your own hands, you will need the following materials:

  • this project involves a carport made of metal, so corrugated sheeting will be used here;
  • metal ridge;
  • timber 100×100 mm for racks and top trim;
  • slats 50×50 mm for arranging the rafter system;
  • board 100×50 mm (optional);
  • board for sheathing (edged or unedged) 20×100 mm or 25×100 mm;
  • wood screws and roofing screws with a press washer;
  • aluminum rivets;
  • fasteners for wooden profiles;
  • sand and cement for concreting the base;
  • antiseptic, paints and varnishes.

To build a reliable carport, first of all, you should choose a suitable place for it. Here factors such as the absence or presence of a slope on the site, ease of access and, of course, the free area that can be allocated for this design are taken into account.

Site preparation and foundation construction

Sketch of the base of the canopy structure

When a suitable construction site has been selected on which your car will fit, you can draw up a construction plan using the available free space or simply sketch a sketch on a piece of paper. In the image above, the perimeter of the finished structure is 3x6 m - this is a fairly spacious parking lot, but if the site does not allow such an area to be allocated, then it can be made smaller.

This is how you can calculate a right angle

In order to transfer a plan or sketch to the ground, you need to calculate a right angle - this is necessary not only for beauty - a symmetrical base will allow you to make a flat roof, where the overhangs will be the same width. To do this, a peg is driven in at any corner point of the future carport and the cord is stretched from it to 4 m, and the opposite end is also fixed with a peg - this is segment BC.

Another cord is stretched from point B by 3 m to point A and taken away from point C exactly 5 m. If all dimensions have been accurately observed, then the resulting angle ABC will be equal to 90ᵒ, that is, it will be straight. Using it, they make a cast-off and calculate the remaining angles of the rectangle. When the pegs are hammered in the four corners, measure the diagonals - the difference between them should not exceed 5 mm - the more accurate the diagonals, the easier it will be to install the roof.

Concrete platform poured on a slope

Since it is possible to build a carport only with a parking area, this area can also be classified as a preparatory process. It is much more convenient to make the frame and roof if a concrete base is poured under your feet, which, moreover, will serve as a guide for installing the racks. If necessary, the plane should be leveled, as was done in the top photo.

It is best to treat all beams and slats with an antiseptic before installation - this is necessary even if they are subsequently covered with paints and varnishes. The antiseptic will protect the wood not only from dampness and microorganisms, but also from woodworms and small rodents.

Installation of beams-racks for the frame

Fastening a wooden beam to a concrete base

The racks can be secured to the concrete with steel corners, screwing them to the floor and to the beam on both sides, but it is better to use special fasteners for this purpose, as in the top image. It is a bracket with an anchor in the middle - the anchor is attached to the concrete, and the console ears hold the wooden profile. There are adjustable brackets on sale that allow you to raise the stand higher, but for such a design it is unnecessary.

If you intend to pour the floor for the parking lot after erecting the frame or even after covering it, then for the racks it will be necessary to make a base in the form of a columnar foundation. This option is more suitable if the racks are made of a tubular or rectangular profile - they can be filled with concrete - the vertical elements here are installed together with the base.

If the site is flooded level, then all the racks can be immediately cut to the same length, but if there is a slope on the floor for water drainage, it is best to level the beam along the tops after installing it. To do this, you need to fix all the racks with fasteners and, starting from the lowest one, transfer the marks with a water level to all profiles. If you have a hand-held circular saw, cutting off the excess is very easy.

Installation of a gable rafter system

After leveling, you can begin installing the upper trim - for this, use a similar beam with a cross-section of 100x100mm - it is desirable that it be without joints, although it is quite acceptable. This profile is fixed using fasteners in the form of reinforced steel corners and strips (can only be connected with self-tapping screws, but this way the joint will not have the proper strength). While installing the harness, check the diagonals.

Options for gable rafter systems

The top image shows how to make a carport with two slopes - these are different options for assembling the rafter system - you can use any of them. Please note that the rafter legs are additionally strengthened with racks, struts, ties and crossbars. There will be snow on the roof in winter, and the wind will storm it at any time of the year, therefore, the structure must have a margin of safety.

When assembling the rafter system, it is not necessary to install a mauerlat here - its functions in such a structure can be perfectly handled by the upper frame - a 100x100 mm beam. It is best to connect the rafter legs to each other on the ground - assemble all the legs at once so that they are the same, and then mount them on the frame.

Ready-made frame for a gable canopy

The platform is 3 m wide, which means that the length of the rafter leg will be no more than 2 m, taking into account the height of the roof break. Therefore, if there is a crossbar at the top of the connection and a tie at the bottom, then for the triangle a strip with a cross section of 50x50 mm will be sufficient, only the step between them is no more than half a meter. If the winters in the region are snowy, it is better to use a 100x50 mm profile for the rafters - this way the roof will withstand much more load.

Crossbars, couplers and legs are connected to each other with self-tapping screws and metal plates in the form of overlays. The rafter sections are fixed to the frame (mauerlat) using reinforced metal corners. After installing all the rafters, they are connected with a ridge beam (in this case, it is a 50x50 mm rail) and checked with a level, and the top with a thread or cord. A sheathing of edged or unedged boards is secured on top with nails or self-tapping screws.

Laying roofing from corrugated sheets

The principle of attaching corrugated sheeting to the sheathing

In this case, a do-it-yourself wooden carport is covered with corrugated sheeting and, taking into account the total roof width of 3 m, one and a half sheets of 120 mm are sufficient for each slope. It turns out that one row will consist of halves - it is better to place it at the bottom, with the cut edge up, so that the cut overlaps the top row. You can also hide the cut edge under the ridge.

The corrugated sheeting is laid with an overlap and if the overlap is two waves, then the protection against leakage will increase significantly. But, regardless of how many waves the overlap is made, it is advisable to fasten it with aluminum rivets - this way the joint becomes more dense. The screws need to be screwed into the gutter - here the thermal expansion is minimal, and the hole is sealed with a press washer with a rubber gasket.

Installation of a ridge with a seal

The ridge is fastened with the same self-tapping screws with a press washer or aluminum rivets through the top corrugated sheeting at a distance of no more than 30 cm. Even if the ridge is wide (200x200 mm), in windy weather rain splashes can be blown inward along the hollows. This, of course, is not critical, since when building a carport with your own hands, you are not building a living space. But such minor leaks can be avoided if you install a special wave seal.

Other frame and roof options

Metal frame and polycarbonate roofing

In the top photo, the do-it-yourself carport is made from a tubular metal profile and polycarbonate. The principle of arranging such a structure remains unchanged, but its installation will require welding to assemble the frame. In addition, covering the roof with corrugated sheets or metal tiles is much easier than with polycarbonate, since there is no need to join the sheets with a profile. Although some may find this option more tempting in terms of design.

And in this photo, the carport is made curved, but single-pitched - this option is suitable specifically for polycarbonate - the sheets can be bent. The roof can also be made of an arched type, but in this case you will need an appropriate rafter system in the form of an arcade. Labor and financial costs, of course, will be much greater than with one or two slopes.

The cheapest way is to make a lean-to canopy from slate, as in this photo, but its service life, of course, will be an order of magnitude shorter, since the slate cracks under the influence of moisture and temperature changes and will have to be replaced. If necessary, you can make a gable roof from this material, but the quality will not improve, the load on the rafter system will simply be less.

Making a carport with your own hands is not difficult, but we should not forget that such a structure undergoes heavy wind loads due to its openness. Therefore, the roofing material, whatever it may be, must be fixed very firmly. The entire frame should be no less stable.
