How to grow seedlings correctly?

If you do not grow seedlings yourself, then when buying seedlings in a store, carefully inspect every bush and every leaf. Without being vigilant, you risk bringing either pests or a disease to your summer cottage, which can destroy other crops.

Fermentation is an effective method, but you should proceed with caution. If the seed is left too long, germination will also be lost. The ideal conditions for such a process are a temperature of 25 degrees, at which the seeds are kept in an acidic environment for about two days. For some varieties, even a day will be enough, for example, cherry tomatoes. And others, for example, black tomatoes, need 4 days for the film to break down. A unique indicator for this procedure is the destruction of the amniotic film. By preparing material for future plantings in this way, you will know exactly how many days it takes for tomatoes to sprout, and you will be able to properly prepare young plants.

Soil preparation

Every gardener, beginner or with many years of experience, dreams of getting a rich and tasty harvest of tomatoes. I would like to see large and ripe tomatoes on the branches of plants, and not small and for some reason completely tasteless tomatoes. If you have a greenhouse, then you won’t be able to grow great tomatoes in it just like that. As experienced gardeners say, there are many little things that are often not taken into account when planting and caring, but in fact they are important. So let's figure out what secrets of growing tomatoes know to experienced gardeners, and how to use them correctly in order to know how many days the tomatoes will sprout.

Diseases and pests

Let's say you know exactly what day tomatoes sprout, but time passes and there are still no sprouts. Do not rush to throw the seed into the trash. First check whether the temperature conditions necessary for their germination are maintained.

Different stages of plant growth require different care. So, during the adaptation period of tomatoes, no procedures should be carried out with them, not even pinching. Removing side shoots will only weaken the plants, since they have not yet managed to take root in the new location. It is better to carry out pinching 2-3 weeks after planting the seedlings in the greenhouse.

It all starts with seeds. If you are just starting to grow tomatoes, do not buy unique varieties that require special growing conditions and care. It’s better to stick to ordinary, unpretentious species. The latter also require attention, but ordinary tomatoes are not so capricious, and caring for them will allow you to become better acquainted with the technical side of planting and growing.

If we talk about why seeds bought in a store do not germinate, the main reason is the expired expiration date or improper storage of the planting material.

Many chemicals effectively combat late blight. However, if the first fruits have already appeared, then you don’t really want to poison the plant with chemicals. There are several folk methods to help cope with this “sore”. For example, you can spray the plants with garlic infused in water. To prepare the medicine, 500 g of garlic is poured with three liters of warm water. Garlic should be infused for three days.

An important factor is the soil in which the young plants will grow. If you are seriously thinking about when to plant tomatoes and how to do it correctly, then first of all take care of the soil. The ideal option is turf soil, peat and humus. All components are taken in a 2:1:1 combination.

The time it takes for peppers to germinate from the moment the seeds are planted depends on many factors. The timing of sowing, the condition of the soil and the seed itself also play an important role. Let's consider how many days it takes for pepper to sprout after sowing.

About germination

Germination is the number of seedlings compared to the volumes of seeded materials. The ability of seeds to produce high-quality seedlings and, in the future, a high yield depends on it. There cannot be one hundred percent germination. Moreover, sweet bell pepper is a capricious crop.

Vegetable seeds remain viable for 3-4 years. It shows the highest percentage in the first year. Therefore, it is worth buying only fresh seed. You also need to pay attention to the company that produced them. Preference should be given to the more well-known and proven one.

Pepper seeds of different varieties germinate in different ways. In order to choose a variety, you need to carefully study the characteristics of the species desired for planting. This will make the choice much easier and give you knowledge of what to expect from them. Before sowing, the seeds are checked and improved. The germination rate of the 1st class must be at least 80% - this corresponds to the state standard. Seeds of the 2nd class (60% rate) can also be sold.

What affects germination

Conditions on which germination depends:

  • degree of ripening of seed;
  • cleaning and drying;
  • Subsequent storage.

Seed quality

Unripe and overdried grains lose their viability. Also, in a humid room, they can become sterile, as moisture raises the temperature inside them. The ability to germinate is lost due to overheating.

Temperature conditions

The conditions in which the seedlings will be grown are important. The room temperature should be 25-28˚C. At low rates, pepper seedlings appear very slowly. Drafts and sudden temperature changes also have a bad effect.

The soil

The soil should be loose, air and moisture permeable. Its temperature indicators may be at the level of 20-25˚С. If the container with soil is on a cold windowsill, you need to put a board under it. This is done in order to prevent hypothermia of the earth.

Air exchange

The soil needs to be watered well, but moderately. Due to excess moisture, air flows poorly to the grains, they can simply suffocate. High-quality seed material then perishes. To ensure free access of air, it is necessary to frequently ventilate the room.

Depth

When peppers do not sprout for too long, the reason may lie in the depth of their planting. The optimal distance is calculated as follows: multiply the size of the seed by 3. Properly deepened seeds can move lower if watering is done after sowing, and not before.

Seed treatment

The treated seed germinates later. Drying and encrusting seeds slows down germination. After processing, they are dried well, and this affects germination.

If all conditions are provided, the time required for sweet pepper seeds to germinate will be about 7-15 days. Sometimes the seed coat remains on the hatched sprouts, which cannot be touched so as not to damage the plant. It will disappear on its own.

How to test seeds for germination

Don't wait until it's time to board. You can determine the percentage of germination immediately after purchase. Then they have time to replace low-quality seed. Along with germination, germination energy is checked - how evenly the sprouts appear.

To do this, the grains are placed on damp gauze. It will be convenient to take 10 or 20 pieces. Then it will be easy to calculate the percentage of seeds that hatch. It will influence the number of grains added during planting. If pepper seeds do not germinate well, you need to sow more of them.

You can also perform calibration. The grains are laid out on paper, and the smallest ones are selected. Then they sort - hollow ones are distinguished from filled ones. To do this, prepare the following solution:

  • 2 tbsp. l. table salt;
  • 1 tbsp. water.

The grains are dipped into the liquid. After 7-10 minutes, low-quality ones will float up. Those that sink to the bottom are selected for sowing. They are removed, washed with fresh water and dried. Calibration is carried out immediately before sowing.

How to speed up seed germination

To improve the quality of seed, a number of procedures can be carried out. They help to shorten the germination period, which means that lettuce peppers sprout much faster, and the seedlings grow strong and healthy.

Disinfection

This procedure is necessary if the seeds are untreated. Disinfection kills various kinds of fungi and bacteria that cause diseases in plants in the future. A 1-2% solution of potassium permanganate is used as a dressing liquid, into which seeds wrapped in gauze are dipped. After 20 minutes, they are removed, washed under running water and dried.

Purchased substances are used for disinfection. You can take the drug "Fitosporin-M". Give it in the amount of 4 drops per glass of water. The product copes well with various pathogens. To prevent the seeds from losing their sowing qualities, you should not carry out the procedure earlier than 2 days before planting.

Saturation of seeds with nutrients

The pepper must have strength for good development. Therefore, even at the stage of preparing seed material, their quality is improved. To do this, use both organic and chemical means:

  1. Ash water - 20 g of wood ash is added to a glass of water, left for 1 day. This substance is very effective, because it contains many useful microelements. The treatment is carried out for 5 hours.
  2. Chicken egg and aloe juice - can be combined or used separately; the product is poured over the grains.
  3. The drugs “Zircon”, “Ivin”, “Epin” are used according to the instructions that are attached.

Growth stimulants ensure rapid germination. Plants develop well and have strong immunity to diseases.

Warming up

The grains are left on a well-heated windowsill or dipped in water heated to 40˚C. A thermos is used to maintain a constant temperature. Then the bell pepper seeds germinate faster, because when heated, growth processes are activated.

Germination

Germination will take much less time if you pre-soak the seed. To do this, take gauze (bandage) and fold it in several layers. Seeds are placed on top, leveled, and covered. Moisten with water. Thaw is perfect. If you don’t have it, you can take a settled one.

Refers to traditional crops that fill the daily diet with useful substances at any time of the year. That is why, throughout the warm period of the year, many try to grow it on their own. While much has been written about gardening, little has been said about how to germinate seeds and get healthy ones.

That is why growing viable and fruit-bearing plants remains a mystery for many compatriots, which ultimately results in a modest harvest and wasted effort. Today we will reveal all the secrets of growing high-quality seedlings and get acquainted with the main intricacies of this process.

Sowing dates

The timing of sowing pepper strictly depends on which group of varieties the seed belongs to. Therefore, before sowing seeds, it is imperative to familiarize yourself with their agronomic characteristics. In modern gardening, the following types of varieties are distinguished:

  • super early (less than 100 days for ripe fruit to appear);
  • early (fruits on average after 120 days);
  • mid-ripening (gives ripe fruits after 120-130 days);
  • late (more than 130 days are required for fruit ripening).

Did you know?Sweet pepper is one of the most ancient crops that is actively grown by humans. The first mentions of the mass cultivation of this vegetable are found in Indian literature, which date back to the end of the 1st century BC. e.

Important!In order to increase the accuracy of calibration, about 40 g of ordinary kitchen salt must be dissolved in 1 liter of plain tap water. As a result, the effectiveness of the method increases by more than 20%.

Stimulation

Stimulation seed germination using special solutions is one of the most effective ways to speed up seed germination. The essence of the method is that the seeds are soaked in special solutions that intensify the processes of cell division in the seed itself. As a result, seed germination can be accelerated several times. In addition, growth stimulants make it possible to obtain a healthy and strong plant.
The method has been known for quite a long time; in the modern world, special chemicals are used for this, synthesized on the basis of natural components of the environment. At home, for decades, they have been using folk methods for preparing stimulant solutions, which are based on derivatives of living organisms (willow juice, juice, chicken egg, etc.).

Germinating seeds in gauze is one of the simplest and most unpretentious ways to accelerate the growth of seedlings. But when using it, it is important to know at what temperature the seeds germinate best, since without this it will not be possible to speed up the process. The essence of the method is that a triple layer of ordinary gauze or bandage must be placed on the bottom of a small translucent vessel.

Important! When germinating seeds on a gauze pad, you must not overdo it; the seeds should be in a layer of damp gauze, and not floating in it along the bottom. Otherwise, the seed will simply deteriorate.

After this, carefully place the prepared seeds on a gauze pad in one layer, cover them with gauze on top, then moisten everything with tap water and place in a warm place (about +26 ° C). If the seeds are moistened in a timely manner, the first shoots will appear on a damp gauze pad within a few days. After this, the sprouts are ready to be transplanted into a soil substrate.

Sowing

The procedure is for the most part no different from sowing seeds of another crop. The prepared seed is sent into the soil, wrapped in a small layer of soil, watered with water and placed in a bright, warm place. To speed up the process, the container with seeds must be covered with a transparent plastic bag, this will create conditions for mini-

Fragrant lecho, delicious adjika and incredibly tasty stuffed peppers - all these dishes have one ingredient in common - sweet peppers. And the best variety is considered to be the one grown with your own hands from a seed.

But sometimes seeds sit in the ground for a long time and refuse to germinate. This can happen for various reasons. Let's figure out how many days it takes for pepper to sprout, and what to do to ensure that the sprouts are friendly and early.

Healthy pepper seeds collected from ripened fruits no later than 2-3 years ago will definitely sprout. To do this, they must find themselves in suitable conditions. There are two of them: temperature 25–28°C and high humidity. Under such conditions, the seeds hatch within 5–6 days.

In a cooler room, the seeds will also sprout, but later - on the tenth or even fifteenth day. If the room temperature is below 20°C, germination drops almost to zero. In this way, nature takes care that the seeds do not germinate too early and freeze.

Preparing seeds before planting speeds up germination

It is advisable to check seed material of questionable quality in advance for germination in order to be sure that the seeds are guaranteed to germinate by the time of sowing. To do this, 2–3 weeks before the expected planting time, several seeds of each variety are selected and soaked in warm water. The swollen seeds are placed in separate shallow containers between layers of damp gauze. Each variety must be marked and the date recorded.

The containers are inspected daily and the cloth is moistened if necessary. If after a week more than half of the grains have hatched, germination is considered normal. After a few more days, the remaining pepper seeds germinate.

Seed material of such germination is considered high quality. It can be sown without fear of being left without a harvest.

If there are less than half of the seedlings, it makes sense to buy fresh ones or stimulate the germination of existing ones. To “stir up” and quickly bring to life weak seed material, do this:

  • the seeds are sorted, separating unusable specimens with spots, deformed and too small;
  • pour water and leave for 10–15 minutes;
  • then those that pop up are removed;
  • the remaining ones are disinfected in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, then washed with clean water.

Then the seeds are soaked in a solution of any of the growth stimulants. You can use both a store-bought drug and a folk remedy. Vegetable growers recommend “Epin-Extra”, “Energen”, “Zircon” from ready-made formulations, and from improvised means – infusion of ash, honey, aloe juice solution.

The seeds are kept in the stimulator for 12 hours to 24 hours. During this time, the hard shell will soften enough for the beneficial substances to penetrate inside.

Prepared seeds can be sown in the ground immediately or wait until the root appears. It is not advisable to delay planting so as not to have to untangle the overgrown roots.

Soil for sowing seedlings

Peppers are considered a demanding crop in terms of growing conditions, and one of them is suitable soil. It should be light and nutritious at the same time. The soil mixture is bought in specialized stores or prepared independently.

For peppers, any plant designed for growing nightshades is suitable. It is quite loose, neutral or slightly alkaline and contains all the necessary micro- and macroelements. A good option is to plant peppers in peat tablets. In them, crops take up little space and do not require picking.

You can prepare the soil mixture yourself by mixing the following components:

  • lowland peat, humus and river sand in equal parts;
  • one part of peat and sand and 2 parts of turf or leaf soil;
  • lowland peat and mature compost with the addition of a tablespoon of superphosphate per bucket of the mixture.

If one of the components is replaced with garden soil, it is preheated in the oven and doused with potassium permanganate for disinfection.

To 10 kg of soil add a glass of sifted wood ash and a complete complex fertilizer designed for vegetable seedlings. Mix everything thoroughly.

Seed placement depth

Seeds are sown to a depth of 1–1.5 cm. Shallow planting will lead to the seeds drying out quickly, and from a greater depth they will not be able to break through to the surface at all.

To be sure that the seeds are not washed away by water or carried away into the depths, they are sown in pre-watered furrows. When the water is absorbed into the soil, they are laid out at a distance of 2–3 cm, sprinkled with dry soil and lightly compacted with your fingers. As a result, the soil will be evenly moistened, and the seeds will remain in the very place where they were placed.

Then the containers are covered with film or glass and the surface is moistened with a spray bottle until the shoots appear.

Soil moisture

To guarantee germination, the soil in seedling containers must have constant moisture. They define it this way: take a lump from the box and squeeze it with your hand. Soil that is too dry will crumble, while soil that is too waterlogged will remain a lump.

Such extremes should not be allowed, as this will negatively affect germination. A few hours after drying, already swollen seeds may finally lose the ability to hatch, and in overly wet soil they rot or become infected with fungal diseases.

Temperature conditions before emergence

Maintaining a stable temperature is another condition for good germination. Immediately after sowing, the seedling boxes are placed in a warm place where the temperature does not drop below 25°C. Optimal values are from 26 to 30°C.

In a cooler room, seedlings will appear a few days later, but to get strong seedlings it is better to find a warmer corner - next to heating appliances or a stove.

After the first green loops appear, the boxes are transferred to a well-lit windowsill and the temperature is maintained at 16–20°C until the cotyledon leaves fully open. Such conditions prevent the seedlings from stretching.

Why don't peppers sprout?

If the above requirements are met, pepper seeds germinate quickly and amicably. But there are still unobvious reasons why the emergence of seedlings may be delayed:

  1. The soil is too heavy, in which the seeds suffer from lack of air.
  2. The containers lack holes for water drainage and a drainage layer. In such conditions, with abundant watering, the seeds rot.
  3. The soil contains large fractions of pebbles or unrotted organic matter. Seeds, falling under such clods, die.

The last reason is poor-quality planting material, when the seeds were collected from unripe fruits, stored in inappropriate conditions, or they were collected too long ago.

To avoid wasting time and to ensure that you get excellent quality seedlings, whenever possible, seed material is prepared independently. Then you won’t have to wonder how long it takes for pepper seeds to sprout or why they didn’t sprout at all.

The closer the time comes to the onset of the new gardening season, the more actively summer residents prepare for growing various fruit crops. Even boxes with seedlings appear on the windowsills. Young plants are closely monitored, because the harvest this year directly depends on their health. But sometimes when germinating seeds, gardeners encounter various difficulties. And today we will clarify how long it takes for seedlings to sprout? And why doesn’t it sometimes germinate?

How long does it take for seedlings to sprout??

The period of seed germination is different for each plant. And it is almost impossible to speed it up in any way. However, information about the timing of emergence of seedlings is very important, because it helps to calculate the dates that are optimal for planting plants in open ground and the approximate period for harvesting.

How many days should we wait for germination??

The first cucumber seedlings can be seen within three days to one week after planting. Cauliflower seeds germinate at approximately the same time.
The period of cutting small squash and zucchini lasts a little longer - from three to ten days. Similar periods are typical for white cabbage.
Eggplant seedlings usually germinate five to ten days after sowing. And tomatoes produce the first sprouts in six to ten days.

You can expect the first onion sprouts five to twelve days after sowing. And celery cuts through in seven to fourteen days, as does rhubarb.
Bell peppers take quite a long time to germinate. Usually, summer residents notice the first entrances only after seven to fifteen days.

When determining the optimal time for planting seeds for seedlings, readers of Popular About Health need to focus not only on the time required for germination, but also on the age at which it is necessary to transfer grown plants to open soil. After all, cucumbers can grow to the desired state in thirty to forty days, but eggplants need an order of magnitude longer - up to eighty days.

Average time for planting seedlings in open soil

When calculating how many days it takes for seedlings to appear, keep in mind that the plants need to be transferred to open ground:

Peppers and tomatoes aged sixty to seventy days;
- eggplants and celery aged sixty to eighty days;
- cabbage aged forty to forty-five days;
- cucumbers, zucchini, and squash aged thirty to forty days.

If you don’t see any seedlings?

In the event that the seedlings do not seem to germinate in the expected period of time, think about it, perhaps you did something wrong. The most common reason for the lack of seedlings is:

Temperature too low. It is believed that the best temperature for the emergence of seedlings is plus twenty-one degrees Celsius. Accordingly, if it is cooler in your house, the seeds may be in no hurry to wake up, considering such conditions to be not favorable enough.

Excessive air humidity. If the soil is too damp, the seeds in it will simply suffocate. After all, for successful germination they really need oxygen, and its lack can lead to the death of planting material.

Excessive depth. Perhaps the seeds do not germinate because you did not plant them correctly. Sometimes excessive seeding depth becomes a serious hindrance for timid seedlings. Of course, weeds can grow even through asphalt, but you definitely shouldn’t count on such skill when planting cucumbers. Classically, the sifting depth is calculated based on the size of the seed - it should be three times greater.

Sometimes even correctly sown seeds penetrate quite deeply into the soil mixture; a similar situation is observed in cases where watering is carried out after sowing, and not before it.

Physiology. You should not expect the first eggplant sprouts to appear three days after sowing, and you should not expect cabbage to sprout at the same time as pepper. The classical timing of emergence of seedlings is known, and sometimes they differ even for the same crops that belong to different varieties.

Treatment. Specially treated planting material germinates a little later. So, if the seeds are coated or encrusted, there is no need to expect rapid germination from them. After all, such planting material is subjected to especially thorough drying; accordingly, it takes longer before germination processes are activated.

Other possible reasons for lack of seedlings

Sometimes seeds do not hatch because they simply cannot sprout. So, you simply won’t get sprouts if you used an expired product. For example, the same tomato seeds can remain viable only for four to five years, no longer. And if you haven’t noticed the seedlings two weeks after planting, then you most likely won’t see them.

Insufficiently correct pre-planting preparation can damage the condition of the planting material. Thus, using a strong solution of potassium permanganate or prolonged treatment can simply burn the seeds. Stimulants must be used strictly in accordance with the instructions, leaving no room for initiative.

With proper sowing organization, the seeds germinate on time, and the plants look healthy and strong. But if this doesn't happen, you most likely did something wrong.
