Merke is a village located in the Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan.

Story

Arab geographers first mentioned Merka in their writings in the 9th-10th centuries: “Mirki is a medium-sized city, fortified, with a citadel.” And it got its name in Farsi. Mirki means "center".

ANCIENT MERKE Many historical documents indicate that from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, the Usun, Gunoi, and Nanpoi tribes lived in Eastern Kazakhstan and the territory of Semirechye. This is also evidenced by many archaeological finds. The “History of the Kazakh SSR” says: “In the 5th century, the Tirek people settled in Northern Mongolia, in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya. Historians believe that they are also divided into the Bugu, Bayyrku, Tolonget, Bekli, Kybyr, Sygyr, Bulak, Karluk, Ediz, Tarinakh, Torgai, Borgur and many others tribes.” It further says: “...that the Turkic Kagan Tumyun unexpectedly attacked these tribes and took captive more than 6 thousand Tirek warriors.” The Turkic Khaganate at that time was located on the ancient land of the Usuns, whose territory ranged from the eastern foothills of Karatau to Dzungaria. The capital of the Kaganate, the city of Suyab, was located in the Chu Gorge. Many historical documents also mention the lands of Mirka, where the Karluk tribes lived. “The Karluks are ancient Turks,” writes Ibn Al-Faqih. The “History of the Kazakh SSR” says that the Karluks lived in the eastern part of Taraz. They had the cities of Kulan and Mirki here. The Karluks mainly belonged to the Caucasian race. Masudi in his work “Muruj-az-zahab” singles out the Karluks from the Turks and writes that they were very beautiful and tall. The Arab traveler Abu Dulaf, who passed through the lands of the Karluks in 25 days, writes: “They (the girls) are very beautiful and all the nearby tribes stole them.” Who can guarantee that the beauties of Taraz did not belong to the Karluk tribes? And in a special scripture for government and financial leaders, which was written in 945 AD and which is located in Baghdad in the Buweyhid Palace, it says: “From the city of Shasha to Gozgerd, the distance is 7 farsakhs ... from Taraz to the right there are mountains, to the left there are warm sands, where the Karluk cattle live for the winter. Beyond those sands is a desert of sand and pebbles, and in it there are jackals, it stretches to the border of the Kimaks. There are a lot of fruits, clover and mountain onions in the mountains. In total, from Taraz to Kulan across the desert, also called Kulan, there are 14 farsakhs. From Kulan to the rich village of Mirki - 4 farsakhs, from Mirka to As-pair through the desert the same as Kulan - also 4 farsakhs. From Suyab to Upper Barsakhan on the border with Kashgaria there are 15 days of travel by caravans through pastures and reservoirs, and for the Turkic mail the journey is three days.” Here one farsakh is equal to 7 kilometers. Reading these lines, it is clear that the Great Silk Road passed through the described territory from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. If earlier Tashkent was called Shash, Kazykurt - Goz-gerd, Dzhambul - Taraz, Sairam - Ispidzhab, Lugovoye - Kulan, then Merke has not changed its name since 1043, and in historical works of 945 it is said that on the territory. Mirki was inhabited by Karluks. The Karluk nomads were mainly engaged in cattle breeding. History also knows the time when these tribes began to master agriculture. Later this became one of the main occupations of the Karluks. You don’t have to look far for an example. This summer, archaeologists from Almaty conducted excavations in the ancient city of Kulan (Lugovoye), where many tools and equipment of the 10th-11th centuries were discovered. Among them there is a rune mill and a stone grater for grains. The fact that the inhabitants of Mirka were engaged in farming is also evidenced by the fact that on May 9, 1987, in the area of Lake Komsomolsk, at a depth of six meters, grains were found in soil more than a meter deep. In Merka, metal products were made, glass was produced, and metalwork and jewelry skills were developed. For example, a lamp and fragments of dishes were discovered in the Mirki fortress, indicating the high skill of ancient manufacturers. The decoration elements do not raise any doubt that the ancient “masters mastered all the subtleties of ceramic art. The capital of the Karluks was the city of Balasagun, which was located in the Chu gorge. The author of such aphorisms as “Knowledge is an inexhaustible treasure”, “The word is sharper than the saber”, “A smart person speaks little”, “Assessing yourself, choose friends”, “Measuring your strengths, lift the weight”, “Two qualities do not age a person, the first is a good character, the second is a good word” and others that are used in modern Kazakh literature, was akyn Yusuf Balasagunsky, who was born in Balasagun in 1015. At the age of 54, in 18 months, he wrote the book “Knowledge that Brings Happiness” in the Turkic language. This means that the Karluks who lived in Mirki and not far from Balasagun are familiar with the works of this thinker. Who knows, maybe Mirki and Balasagun were centers of the culture of that time. Interesting information about the inhabitants of Mirki is also found in works written in Persian, which say that “... this area is on the way to where the ancient city of Taraz stands. This area is located at a distance of three pajags (about 15-16 km) from the Aspara fortress, the local population calls it Mirki. The city is located on a hill near a small river, there is a mosque, a caravanserai and a good bazaar, the people there are very tall and beautiful. Caravans come mainly from Turkestan, Jharkend and other cities of the Bukhara Emirate; the city is surrounded by greenery.” This book is kept in the district
