Summer canopies diagrams of rafter systems. We make a spectacular canopy from wood with our own hands

We will send the material to you by e-mail

An important part of the exterior of a country house is the canopy. It is designed to protect part of the yard from precipitation and ultraviolet rays, and also performs a decorative function. A small area, covered with material on top, consists of sheds attached to the house. Photos of similar structures can be seen in this review. In this case, the supports of the structure are brought to the required height. Attaching to the main structure involves attaching one side of the structure to the wall of the house.

The canopy structure allows you to create a magnificent outdoor recreation area

Sheds attached to the house can be made with your own hands. The photo shows the main stages of installation. The frame of the structure is often made of profiled pipe or timber. This structure is adjacent to the wall and takes on the load from the snow accumulated on the roof.

The roof is usually covered with corrugated sheets, slate or galvanized material. The metal for the frame structure has ductility and strength. It suits different design styles. Such structures can be erected with your own hands.

The wood frame system combines well with other materials. Wood suits most architectural designs. Before use, this material should be treated with protective agents. Polycarbonate canopies attached to the house are becoming increasingly popular, photos of which can be viewed on the Internet.

Polycarbonate is easy to assemble and comes in a variety of colors

Polycarbonate enjoys the following advantages:

  • plastic is characterized by durability. Mechanical impact is not scary for him;
  • light weight of the material;
  • polycarbonate transmits light well;
  • flexibility of the canvas.
Helpful information! When purchasing a design kit for self-assembly, you must check the integrity and strength of all connections.

Sheds attached to the house: photos and design features

Sheds attached to the house, as shown in the photo, can be of two types. These are cantilever models and awnings on supports. The console version can be of any length, but its width should not be more than two meters. Support structures can be used for a variety of purposes.

Awnings can have different purposes:

  • awnings for car protection;

  • various awnings: with posts, retractable or basket.

Homeowners often choose wood sheds. Such structures have an excellent set of characteristics:

  • are distinguished by ease of construction;
  • can withstand long periods of exposure to the open air, especially when properly processed;
  • characterized by safety for human health;
  • have an affordable price.
Helpful information! For comfortable use of the canopy, it is worth taking care of the installation of light and lighting fixtures.

Options for canopies attached to a house made of corrugated sheets: photos and design features

An awning made of corrugated sheets can be made in various configurations. Single-pitch, gable and arched structures are created from corrugated sheets. In addition, a structure made from this material has the following features:

  • ease of manufacture;
  • saving money;
  • long service life.
Important! A canopy made of corrugated sheets is mounted only with galvanized self-tapping screws that have a rubber seal.

Creating a Project

When choosing a design project, it is worth deciding on the following parameters:

  • dimensions and purpose of the structure;
  • plot size;
  • snow and wind loads;
  • snow depth and expected annual precipitation;
  • structural features of the main structure.

Before installation work, a drawing must be completed. Based on the size of the building, the required amount of material is determined.

Helpful information! When creating a carport, it is worth considering the passage of a loaded vehicle.

Preparatory work

Before planned sheds attached to the house are created, photos of which can be viewed on the website, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work. For this purpose, a suitable area is marked out, and trees are uprooted from it. The clean area is leveled. At the same time, sand and gravel are added.

Recesses are drilled under the canopy supports. And at this stage it is worth considering laying the cable under the lighting sources. A certain step for placing supports is selected. It depends on the weight of the roof and frame part.

The stands are lowered into the prepared pits and filled with concrete mixture. The pillars are set according to level.

Important information! If groundwater is located nearby, then the ends of the pillars need to be additionally waterproofed. Metal supports are pre-treated with a primer.

How to make a polycarbonate canopy attached to a house: photos and installation steps

12-15 days after the concrete has completely hardened, you can begin assembling the structure. Brackets are mounted on the wall, and then a transverse beam is mounted on top.

Creating a sheathing

The top trim is being performed. The end parts of the racks are connected using a transverse beam and to each other. In this case, parallel laid profiles are used. The metal frame system is welded together, and the wooden frame system is tightened with steel corners.

Welding areas are cleaned, primed and painted. The rafters are mounted with transverse parts in increments of 600 mm. The structure is attached to the supporting beam using steel angles. The sheathing is laid across the rafters and mounted with self-tapping screws.

Roof installation

Sheets of roofing material are cut to size. Then they are attached to the sheathing. Holes for self-tapping screws are first made in the polycarbonate.

To facilitate water drainage, the cells should be directed downwards. When working with plastic, do not forget to leave gaps between. The dimensions of the holes should be made with a margin of 2-3 mm. There are some features of installing roofs made of other materials.

Wood beams can be used as beams. Over time, cracks may appear in the material, which will reduce the rigidity of the structure. After installing the beams, transverse boards are installed, and then the metal tiles are fastened. Installation of this material is carried out from the bottom sheets. It is worth considering that there should be an overlap of the upper sheets on the lower ones.

It is difficult to imagine a modern country house without a canopy. This architectural structure serves two important functions. Firstly, it protects the building from rain and sun. Secondly, it is an excellent means of decorating the facade of a house. Hardworking and inventive owners of summer cottages have come up with a lot of ways to create an additional roof over their heads, which can be made from scrap materials and have a wide variety of shapes.

Types of canopies

The classification of canopies is extensive. Depending on the design features they are:

  • inclined (double or single slope);
  • straight;
  • multifaceted (in the form of curved arches, domes, pyramids, polygons, arcs).

Depending on their location, canopies are divided into:

  • free-standing, erected away from the main building (carports, landscape sheds);
  • attached. They are erected above the entrance to the house or above the open veranda;
  • built-in They are an integral part of the architectural ensemble. Most often they are built into a barbecue area or into an existing building;
  • decorative. Serve as decoration for garden compositions.

If we talk about materials, canopies can be made of stone, wood, polycarbonate, or combined.

A wooden canopy is the most popular type, because it is easy to implement and does not require any special expenses for arrangement. Anyone can build such a structure if they have the desire.

DIY wooden canopy

Are you puzzling over the problem of how to build a wooden shed and don’t know where to start construction work? The first step towards realizing your cherished goal is developing a project.

Project development

Wooden shed designs are designed to analyze existing conditions. Especially if the structure will be attached to an already finished building. Information about the foundation and facade wall of the house is extremely important, as well as climatic conditions (wind load, snow thickness in winter, cardinal directions in the location chosen for construction).

In addition, it would not be amiss to think about decorative elements, types of roofing materials that are preferable in a particular case, and choose the shape and size of the canopy. The more detailed your project is, the easier it will be to put it into practice. Accurate numbers will help you correctly calculate the amount of required consumables. The easiest way is to make a wooden canopy over the porch that will be reliable and stable.

When developing a project, you should take into account the working dimensions of roofing materials. Lay the slate sheets overlapping on the ground across and along the waves. Only after receiving the exact dimensions of the clean roof can you begin.

Installation of racks

The design of a wooden canopy can be made from any wood, but pine will best cope with its responsibilities. It is beautiful, durable, light in weight and can fit seamlessly into any exterior.

The tree can be freshly sawn, the main thing is that there is no bark on the beams. The recommended cross-section is no less than 75x75 mm. The part of the beam installed on the ground is treated with bitumen mastic before installation, which protects against the negative effects of moisture. The pillars are installed at a distance of a meter from each other so that the roof hangs over the front by at least 200 mm, on the sides (along the waves) - by 50-100 mm.

Using a hand drill or shovel, we prepare wells located along the same line, 500 mm deep. Do not forget to check the diagonals of the canopy - they must be the same. Using a plumb line or a building level, we install the slats. Strictly vertical. For fixation we use auxiliary bars, which can then be removed without any problems.

The free space is filled with concrete or crushed stone. The second option is more profitable. Crushed stone costs nothing, does not require complex mixing, and “holds” just fine. After installing the pillars, they must be cut in height with a bevel corresponding to the slope of the plane so that the rafters lie on the upper ends of the beam. Using a tapping cord or hydraulic level, we get a horizontal line.

The height of the racks at the bottom of the slope should not be lower than 1800 mm. However, if you are planning a rack or table in this part, then this indicator can be made smaller.

Installation of rafters

Next, the installation of a wooden canopy proceeds to a simple, but requiring extreme care, stage - installation of the rafter system. Rafters are beams with a section of 150x50 mm. This strength will be quite sufficient to cover a 6-meter span. Subject to the slope and calculated weight, of course.

The distance between the rafters is about 1 meter. One side is attached to a wall or support board, mounted in advance, and the other is placed on the racks, passing the line at the site of the planned overhang strictly perpendicularly. Wood screws or steel angles are used to connect the components of the rafter system. Fastening to a mineral base, for example, a brick wall, is carried out using corners, consoles, dowels or metal anchors.

We carry out the sheathing

The sheathing is made on top of the rafters (perpendicularly). It is better to use edged boards with a width of 160 mm and a thickness of 30 mm. The boards are distributed along the axes at a distance of 900 mm.

The boards must fit under the joints and the middle of the slate sheets (size 900x1800 mm). The last and first lines should be along the edges of the slope. Screwing must be done using self-tapping screws.

Laying slate

The wooden shed for the dacha is almost completed. You can begin laying the roof covering. The slate is screwed onto the top of the wave using galvanized self-tapping screws equipped with a countersunk head. Experts advise placing special plastic washers under the heads. An average of 11 screws are required per sheet. If there are no washers, then they can be replaced with “Ranilov self-tapping screws” or fasteners with a press washer.

Slate manufacturers often complete their products with trapezoidal or round spacers, which allow them to securely fasten the screws without disturbing the wave shape. Slate sheets are mounted from bottom to top. The rows overlap each other by 100 mm. For reliability, it is better to keep the front and side overhangs minimal (50-100 mm). If necessary, slate is cut with a regular grinder with a diamond wheel.

Important nuances of work

Wooden elements require treatment with compounds that protect against precipitation, mold, mildew and create a decorative effect that is attractive to the eye. Impregnation can be either colorless or tinted.

Now you know how to make a wooden canopy. There are only a few points that require immediate consideration. Pay due attention to the floor. A simple backfill of coarse crushed stone, plank flooring, sandstone cladding, concrete screed - the choice of how to create the “soil” is yours.

Make sure there is light and a couple of outlets under the canopy. The functionality of the finished structure will be added to the grill, hob, and barbecue. Decor variations will depend only on your preferences - you can age the wood, decorate it with climbing plants, wooden shelves, and handmade vases. Think, try and make your dream of a corner of coziness and comfort in the lap of nature come true.

First, let's figure out what a canopy is and how it differs from a gazebo and an awning? This is a building that has long been built during bad weather to hide people, animals, and things. Distributed everywhere. It’s easy to build canopies for your dacha using scrap materials with your own hands.

Advantages of awnings

  • The design is lightweight and easy to install.
  • The structure is strong, but not as fundamental as a gazebo or building.
  • A stationary roof, unlike an awning, is more durable. It will serve its owners for many years.
  • Much cheaper than other similar structures, but it performs the function of protection from bad weather perfectly.

As for the shortcomings, we can name only one. This building is open to all winds and is well ventilated. You need to remember this during construction and make sure that your creation stands firmly on the ground, is especially durable, and can withstand any weather conditions. This condition is not difficult to fulfill; you, of course, can cope with it if you decide to build a shed at your dacha.
First, we decide on the type of structure and the necessary materials.

Types of canopies

  • As a continuation of the roof, attached canopies are built - canopies. On one side of such a structure there is a wall (part of the house), the other sides are open.
    Used to cover porches, stacked firewood, verandas, barbecues.
  • Free-standing structures are the second type of such structures. In the countryside, at the dacha, an “umbrella” covers wells and summer kitchens; in the city limits, there are transport stops, parking lots, cafe areas, sports facilities, bus stations, and market stalls. At the dacha, a green hedge is planted near such sheds. The result is a wonderful garden gazebo.
    The universal building protects the population from scorching sun rays, pouring rain, unpleasant wind, and snowfall.

The roofs of buildings also come in different types - straight or inclined.

  • Direct. The simplest option is direct coating. Used for parking.
  • Inclined. There are single and double slopes. Due to the fact that the roof has an angle of inclination, water drains from the roof in a timely manner.
  • Complex. Sometimes in design projects non-standard, unusual, or original shapes are chosen. For example, with a semi-arch. It will also be easy to make such a canopy with your own hands.

Materials for hanging structures

Structures of this type are built from available materials that are sold everywhere.

  • For the frame they use wood or metal, or combine wooden parts of the building with metal ones.
  • Plastic pipes have been increasingly used as a base lately.
  • For the roof, choose, at your discretion, a covering from the list:
    • metal tiles;
    • modern polymer material - monolithic polycarbonate, fiberglass, other durable coating;
    • corrugated sheeting;
    • slate;
    • special fabrics intended for awnings;
    • durable glass, plexiglass;
    • durable polyethylene.

Preliminary work before construction

  1. We think over the canopy diagram, draw a drawing.
  2. We choose a place for the extension, clean and level it, and make markings for supports.
  3. To protect wood from mold and rot, we treat wood parts with an antiseptic. With a ready-made composition or, for example, we paint it with a primer and then with paint.
  4. Let's prepare supports for the structure. We take 5 blocks of wood (90x90 mm). Since the roof is planned to be sloping, the bars intended for the front supports should be 40-50 cm less than the height that is measured on the wall of the house. We prepare the rafters and blanks for the sheathing.
  5. We fix the vertical distance on the building with a horizontal block (2.4 meters).

We build a wooden canopy with a polycarbonate roof with our own hands according to the instructions

  1. We drill holes for installing a vertical beam. If there is no drill, we simply dig holes 0.5 meters deep.
  2. Pour sand and crushed stone (10 cm) into the holes to create a pillow. Then we insert the supports strictly perpendicularly, checking the correct installation with a plumb line and level.
  3. Fill the holes with concrete.
  4. We connect the horizontal beam and the corners of the support to each other.
  5. We mount the rafters on horizontally attached slats and the sheathing of the structure.
  6. We connect two polycarbonate sheets (1000x3000 mm) 8 mm thick to obtain the intended roof size (2000x3000). We suggest using an HP profile for this. To prevent the plastic from cracking during operation, use self-tapping screws with rubber washers.
  7. We install the roof on the sheathing. Due to the difficulty of access to the top with large plates, preliminary work can be done at the bottom, and then lifted, say, with an electric hoist and secured.
  8. The canopy for the cottage is ready. The result was something like a canopy, an extension of the roof of the house.

Polycarbonate is a translucent, lightweight and durable plastic. A summer cottage canopy with a plastic roof provides good protection from rain and snow. It does not deform, although it is easier to bend the required shape from it than from other materials. A modern polycarbonate roof will last you for many years.

We install a free-standing canopy with a corrugated roof

Roofing made from profiled corrugated sheets is used in most cases for car parks in country houses. Mounted on metal stands.
The holes for the racks are drilled deeper - up to 1 meter deep.
The main parts of the structure are welded - you will need a welding machine. Side trusses and sheathing are prepared in advance, and then everything is connected into a single frame.
The roof is attached to the sheathing.

Canopies with fabric covering

Its advantage is the variety of colors and shades, fabric patterns. A fabric awning can become a work of art. It is chosen in cases of manufacturing exotic designer canopies. A roof made from this material will decorate your summer cottage and please the eye. Most often used for summer cottages.
The peculiarity of this design is that fabric, in any case, is a short-lived material. During autumn bad weather, winter snowfalls, and during non-resort periods, it can become unusable and tear. Therefore, the fabric covering from such structures is removed for the autumn-winter period and put on in the spring, before the next summer season.
This canopy is built in the same way as the previous options.

The simplest do-it-yourself canopy made from the simplest materials

If you urgently need to build a hanging structure for your dacha with your own hands, you can do it in a very simple way.
To build a canopy, take

  • 2 five-meter PVC pipes (vinyl);
  • 2 pieces of thick polyethylene (shower curtains are suitable);
  • braid, strong threads.

Build the canopy according to the instructions:

  1. Sew the curtains into one large sheet.
  2. From the braid, make 40 loops on which the awning will be held (cut 40 suitable pieces).
  3. Sew the loops to the polyethylene.
  4. Place loops on the pipes.

Then decide on the installation location of the structure. Mark with pegs on the ground the points where you will insert the awning pipes. Place your structure by digging PVC pipes into the ground. Your canopy is ready! Your imagination will tell you the colors of the curtains - and the awning will come out wonderful.
Modern materials also suggest other design solutions. Take plastic pipes and, using clamps (also PVC), assemble a rectangular frame (after drawing its diagram). Attach thick fabric or polyethylene on top. You will get a wonderful carport.
In the same way, you can make a universal structure from thin plastic pipes and durable polyethylene. Such pipes bend easily. Experiment with arched shapes. You will get a folding portable canopy.
Put in a little work and patience - as a result, you will have the much-needed canopy at your dacha.

If initially in the project you did not provide for a veranda or terrace, a very convenient thing, and in a hot climate simply necessary, then you may well fill this gap by building an additional canopy for the house. With modern construction technology and the availability of materials, you can completely cope with the task with your own hands. Regardless of whether you use metal beams or wooden sheathing for the improvised one.

Canopy for the house

At least in constructive terms, everyone canopy for the house very similar to all others, but still, before construction, it is customary to distinguish them according to their future functional purpose; both the arrangement of the foundation and the calculated strength of all supports depend on this. The need to cover a certain area with a roof arises when you plan to make a summer kitchen next to the house, an additional fully glazed gazebo for autumn-spring tea parties. Or maybe you want to protect your car parked outside from rain and snow, or you want to protect the porch and front door area. A canopy may be needed even when the living room on the first floor is located on the sunny side of the house and gets very hot during the day. It is the canopy, like the visor of a hat, that helps solve this problem and improve the microclimate in the room.

Before building, you will need to visualize your project, enter the building into . We are not talking about using special computer programs; such a visualization can simply be drawn with colored pencils, but this technique will allow you to most clearly determine not only the dimensions, but also the material that you will use for construction.

Shed adjacent to the house, can be made of several basic materials: metal, wood or brick (we are talking about brick supports on which the flooring is already installed). If we talked about this topic 15-20 years ago, then almost every craftsman would have advised making a metal welded structure, covering the roof with corrugated sheets or tiles. Today, new favorites are emerging among building materials, which have won a large segment of the market for such buildings. We are talking about transparent polycarbonate, which is many times stronger than glass, capable of withstanding heavy loads of precipitation and wind without deforming or cracking, and at the same time transmitting a lot of sunlight. Now every self-respecting builder should know.

Polycarbonate can be bent, making the roof of the most bizarre shapes, plus, its installation is not difficult due to the light weight of the material, it can be processed with a standard set of tools, cut, sawed, drilled. Compared to traditional roofing coverings, polycarbonate has only one drawback - its cost. But, of course, if you do not spend it on construction, but use it for such a necessary and useful task as building a canopy for many years to come, then it will still be better to fork out for it. Just don’t save on it by buying regular polycarbonate, without a special coating that protects the material from ultraviolet rays. Otherwise, after the first season, cloudy spots may appear on the surface and it will become fragile.

Canopy in front of the house

By design canopy in front of the house It can be either installed on permanent supports or cantilevered. If everything is more or less clear with the supports, they are what is most often meant, but the cantilever varieties are more likely referred to as a process, because the console is attached directly to the house. The maximum size of such a canopy is 2 meters, but is this so small, is it possible to cover the porch and front door with a small canopy?

In fact, cantilever structures allow you to get a fairly large terrace for relaxing around the perimeter of the house, especially at that time of day when a two-meter panel or roof additionally receives maximum shade. In addition, today on the market you can find many offers of sliding cantilever structures, which, if necessary, you can extend even further, and after use, remove them to their original dimensions. Just remember that the two-meter limit is not made because the manufacturer is harmful, but for maximum wind protection of the structure. If the canopy is longer, then there is a risk that in a strong wind it will simply be torn out of place, thereby damaging the wall of the house to which it is mounted.

The canopy is large, long and wide, under which a car can hide and the whole family can have a get-together; of course, it cannot have a console design. There is no need to save money; you need to equip strong, permanent supports on which a full-fledged roof will rest, and the junction of the canopy with the residential building is closed when performing roofing work. Of course, the budget for such a building will be much higher, but taking into account the above, you will be able to make your family happy with a useful room for a long time.

Wooden canopy for the house

The design features of a residential building may require special design solutions from you. And if you have done it for a wooden house, then it’s worth doing it anyway wooden canopy for house, although it will be somewhat more expensive and more troublesome to operate. After all, wood, as a material, has that special charm that still has a significant influence on the minds of dacha owners. And if, all other things being equal, you show them the choice of a metal canopy or a wooden one, then the majority will vote for the second option.

The peculiarity of working with wood is that the room is outdoor, which means that the wood will be subject to serious atmospheric loads. Especially if your site is located in a lowland or swampy area, then you will need to additionally process each support that is to be installed according to the project. The construction of a structure is not much different from the process. You need to start with the project, calculate the future weight of all the supports and the roof in order to decide on the foundation and the number of beams.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the options for such crafts for the garden, which do not provide a continuous roof on top. Such buildings are built near modern town houses and cottages; due to their light weight, they are not at all difficult to construct and do not require such careful preparation and calculations. Upstairs, on the frame beams (mauerlat), simply lay transverse beams, which will provide quite a lot of shadow downwards. This design came to us from the architectural style of the Mediterranean region, where there is not much rainfall, but in the hot summer you want not only protection from the sun, but also air movement. If you want to get more shade, then it’s easy to cover such a roof with grapes or other climbing plants, or stretch fabric panels on top that can be easily hung up and removed.

Shed adjacent to the house

So, we will assume that the project shed adjacent to the house, you are ready, and you can begin construction work. It is necessary to mark the places for the pits of future supports; their diameter is about 20 centimeters and the depth is 50-60 (in any case, up to dense soil, be guided by your natural conditions). Each such pit is filled with up to a bucket of crushed stone, and then supports are inserted. You can also use special fasteners that are mounted inside the pit, and the beams are already attached to this fastener. The ultimate goal is to concrete supports that are level inside the hole, be it wooden beams or metal pipes. Note that the bars must be treated with special means, antiseptic impregnations, and pipes and profiles should be bought either aluminum or galvanized, which are not subject to rust, but when buying ordinary iron ones, it is better to cover their entire surface with a special primer.

Before equipping the site in the perimeter between the supports, it is worth laying electrical wiring and, if necessary, a water supply and sewerage system. After this, the floor is either filled with concrete screed, or paving slabs, decking boards are laid, or sand and crushed stone are simply poured in (for example, if you are just making a parking space for a car). After the concrete screed has dried, you can begin assembling the main structure.

We should start working on the wall of the building, to which one side of our future canopy will be attached. Special brackets are hung on it, onto which a transverse beam is mounted; it is this beam that will take on all the load-bearing loads of the entire structure. After this, you can start lathing.

Canopy in front of the house

Forming the sheathing canopy in front of the house begins with the formation of the top trim, which will become part of the future roof. At the ends of the supports that we previously installed and concreted, transverse beams are laid, which need to be used to connect all the support pillars into a single system. That is, first the perimeter is connected, and then (depending on the size of the canopy and the number of supports), and then the internal beams are laid parallel to each other. For a metal profile, the connection method is welding, and wooden beams need to be tightened together with special corners. Do not forget to check the evenness of the corners and surfaces using a special level. The weld seams on the profile are processed; they need to be thoroughly cleaned and then covered with a layer of protective paint.

Polycarbonate is cut to the dimensions you need - this is the distance between adjacent beams with a small margin for the seam. But in fact, you can use a sheet of exactly the size that is convenient for you to mount, that is, you can even attach it across a row. Cellular polycarbonate has small cells on one side to remove condensate moisture; make sure that all sheets are positioned with the cells facing down. The sheets are connected to each other using a special H-shaped profile, which will allow the seams to be made neat and airtight, but the material must be fastened into the beams with special self-tapping screws with rubberized thermal washers. You should not connect the sheets very tightly, as the material will expand as the temperature rises. Be sure to leave a certain gap for the compression seam.

Any owner of a country plot of land, coming to his property from a stuffy metropolis, strives to spend as much time as possible in the fresh air, and not in a country house. However, a pleasant pastime is often hampered by the scorching midday sun or light but cold rain. Gazebos and awnings for summer cottages will help you cope with these troubles - it’s not at all difficult to make them yourself, and the resulting conveniences can hardly be overestimated.

Types of canopies

Before you begin making a protective structure, you need to select the appropriate material and design of the canopy. This element of landscape design can stand alone, or be attached to the house, imitating a wide porch or terrace.

The main types of canopies are shown in the table.

View Design Features
Attached This structure is located close to one of the walls of the country house. The result is a canopy with one closed and three open sides. The design is very functional: located on the side of the front door, it can serve as a veranda or porch, and on the other side it can serve as an elegant patio.
Standing separately The structure is a kind of pergola equipped with a durable roof. Regardless of how this country canopy is made: with your own hands or with the help of a hired team, its scope can be quite wide: from a gazebo to a car park. You can even equip a path in this way connecting the entrance to the house with a gate leading outside the site.
With straight roof This structure is being built according to the most simplified scheme. Well suited for those summer residents who do not know how to build a canopy at the dacha with their own hands. Among other things, the price of materials in this case, as well as the estimate for the entire construction, will be minimal.
With sloping roof Such a canopy is more difficult to manufacture, but the inclined planes of the roof do not allow water or large masses of snow to accumulate on the roof.
Complex shape This canopy carries not only a functional, but also an aesthetic load, being an element of landscape design. An example is a gazebo with a curved arched roof. The instructions for its manufacture are quite simple, because the profiled roofing sheet and metal supports bend perfectly without the use of special equipment.

Another issue that needs to be addressed is the materials used.

Here are just the most common types of roof coverings:

  • corrugated sheets;
  • plexiglass;
  • polycarbonate;
  • slate;
  • metal tiles;
  • thick textiles.

Wooden awnings for summer cottages are very common: even an inexperienced craftsman can make them with his own hands.

Advice!
In addition to wood, you can use brick, stone or metal pipes to build supports.

Self-production of canopies

Polycarbonate construction

This material is considered one of the most modern and is perfect for constructing a protective canopy in the country.

The main advantages of polycarbonate:

  • strength;
  • durability;
  • excellent resistance to cold, heat and precipitation;
  • ability to take any geometric shape;
  • ease of installation (to secure the sheets, ordinary self-tapping screws equipped with a rubber washer are required).

Using the described plastic sheets, you can protect any area of the site from precipitation. The main thing is to design and build a reliable frame, the material for which can be a wooden beam or a metal profile.

This design looks best right next to the house. Adjacent to the wall, the canopy creates, and the sloping roof allows rainwater to flow down without leaving unpleasant and unsightly puddles on the polycarbonate surface.

The entire manufacturing process can be divided into several stages.

  1. For the support pillars, take a wooden beam with a cross-section of 90x90 mm (the quantity is determined based on the size of the canopy). Remember that the front supports must be slightly shorter than the rear ones to create a bevel.

Note!
To prevent wood rotting, all parts of the canopy must be treated with antiseptic compounds before installation.

  1. To ensure that the supports are in the right place, you should make an initial marking of the area. Then, in designated places, it is necessary to dig holes about half a meter deep and 10 cm larger than the cross-section of the timber.
    Concrete pillars for the foundation are cast at this location. You can use special blanks sold in construction supermarkets. It is enough to dig them into the soil, which is then compacted well.
    The support beams will be fixed to the foundation using special brackets or metal corners.
  2. Considering that the structure is adjacent to the house, it is necessary to attach a horizontal cross member to the wall of a residential building, which will serve as a support for the rafters and sheathing. The latter are also attached to the crossbar using corners. If you limit yourself to self-tapping screws, the structure may collapse due to insufficient reliability of the connections.
  3. A beam of 70x70 mm is suitable for rafters, and no more than 50x50 mm for sheathing. You should not use more massive lumber, as this will make the structure heavier.

  1. Polycarbonate is attached to the frame using self-tapping screws. It is also advisable to provide a device for water drainage. Very elegant gutters can be purchased at construction supermarkets.

Using corrugated sheets

Galvanized sheets, distinguished by their excellent appearance and painted in various colors, are often used for the construction of canopies that protect personal vehicles from bad weather. Remember that, unlike polycarbonate, this material does not allow sunlight to pass through, so it creates a completely shaded area.

To make the structure more durable, it is better to make the frame from metal blanks. You can stop at four support posts, fastened along the upper edge with beams and sheathing.

The construction process is not much different from the construction of a polycarbonate canopy described above. The only point is that such a structure is rarely adjacent to the house, more often it stands at some distance from it.

Let's look at some small details:

  1. As in the previous case, you should mark the places for fixing the vertical metal posts, onto which a profiled pipe with a cross-section of 40x60 mm will go. The distance between the posts is about 1 meter, but depends on the thickness and weight of the profiled sheet used.
  2. In this case, a concrete foundation is required. Crushed stone is poured into a hole up to 60 cm deep, a support is installed and the pit is filled with concrete.

Advice!
While the concrete is curing, do not forget to control the vertical position of the post.
Otherwise, the canopy will come out crooked and may collapse during operation.

  1. After the concrete has completely hardened, which takes from 1 to 2 weeks, you can continue working on the construction of the canopy. For horizontal beams, a profile with a section of 50x30 mm is suitable. In this case, it is necessary to use welding, which sometimes becomes a problem for novice craftsmen.
  2. The last stage is the installation of sheathing and installation of corrugated sheeting. The best choice is ordinary self-tapping screws.

Fabric awnings

When you don’t want to waste precious time making complex and bulky structures, your choice is a lightweight fabric canopy.

The store sells ready-made frame structures, which include everything you need. You just need to mount it on the wall and enjoy your holiday.

The main advantage is the ability to quickly and without much effort using specially designed levers and mechanisms.

You can make a fabric canopy yourself, in which case its design will not differ much from the options discussed above. Unlike the polycarbonate model, it is possible to purchase brighter and more picturesque textiles that enliven and refresh the appearance of the site.

On a note!
Remember that the fabric must be impregnated with a water-repellent composition, otherwise the first rain will force you to seek shelter in the house.

Conclusion

There are many different models of canopies that can satisfy even the most sophisticated taste. A self-created canopy will become not only protection from the sun, but also a source of pride for the dacha owner.
